December, 2006
Aloha Hawaii Gourd Society members,
friends and supporters...
Mahalo for a successful first year
of the Hawaii Gourd Society. 2006, has been a year
of birth and growing for our new (ancient) society.
Our goal (and passion) is continuing the ipu tradition
in the Hawaiian Islands.
We wish to thank Michael Harburg
for his term as the 2006 Hawaii Gourd Society Honorary
President, and, for his Master teaching of the wonderful
Ni'ihau method of ipu decorating. His contribution
has been priceless. Mahalo Michael!
Beginning Dec. 8, 2006, we will
be opening a new headquarters and museum for the Hawaii
Gourd Society. We will be located in the historically
renovated Tomikawa Store,
Holualoa...76-5902 Mamalahoa Hwy, Holualoa.
Future classes and meetings will
be here.
Please look around for photos,
art, musical instruments, or just any old ipu information
regarding the Hawaiian Ipu culture...and, consider
adding it to our museum. We are putting together a
collection for future generations. Ipus rule in Hawaii!
Talk to Tutu and the Uncles for ipu treasures. Mahalo
for your help.
The Hawaii Gourd Society officers
for 2007 will be:
President: Mary E Amos
Vice-President: Evie Morby
Sec./Treasurer: Emily Radisich
Upcoming events (dates are not
set) will include a seminar by Uncle Val Ching in the
ancient Hawaiian art of knot tying for carrying the
ipu, and, a seminar in Hawaiian plant dyes by Susan
O'Malley. Anyone interested in either seminar, please
e-mail a reply. As mentioned, we do not have dates
yet but expect these classes after the Holidays.
Regarding the First Annual Gourds
in Paradise Festival...June 15,16,17, 2007.
Start making plans to attend now...see
us at the HGS headquarters for seeds for ipu growing
tips...plant now for ipu ready to finish at the festival...you
have just enough time!
Mahalo for your continuing support.
Mele Kalikimaka,
Mary Amos
