September 7, 2009
Aloha Hawaii Gourd Society members and supporters, this has been a very fast moving year...please forgive the lack of correspondence.
The Hawaii Gourd Society has been busy meeting our obligations and growing ipu for the future. The 2009 Ipu Cultural Festival (Jan. 2009 @ Keauhou Beach resort) was a tremendous success, thanks to the wonderful artists, musicians, instructors and cultural practitioners.
The 2010 Ipu Cultural Festival is set for Jan. 22, 23, & 24, 2010 @ the Hale Halewai Pavilion in Kailua-Kona. We will have a day or two of classes at Ipu Lani farm in Honaunau to begin the festival. I will advise you of the schedule as the time nears. Vendors, musicians, and Cultural practitioners please call Mary @ 808 937-4308 to reserve your place in the festival. There will be no charge for any vendor, bring a table cover for park provided tables. There is a County Park fee of $25 a day (total=$50 if you wish to sell your work). We are thinking about a pot-luck style dinner on Sat. 1/23 evening and also some type of pot-luck for vendors and participants on Sunday afternoon. Please give me your feedback on these thoughts.
Hawaii Gourd Society is pleased to announce that we now have Hilo side support for a second Ipu Festival, which will also become an annual event. Expect to hear more about dates and planning in the near future.
The Hawaii Gourd Society wishes to thank Evie Morby and Emily Radisich for their efforts and support as Board members during our founding years. The current Board of Directors are: Mary Amos, President; John McCollum, Vice-President; Mele Kama, Secretary and Sam Kama, Treas. . Please expect a membership card to be issued (soon). The board members also wish to express gratitude to Ipu Lani, Inc. (our parent 501-c 3) for the excellent funding in 2009 along with use of Ipu Lani Farm, which is dedicated to the Hawaiian Ipu Culture and grows ipu for the Hawaii Gourd Society. In 2009, HGS has (so far) presented 10 different workshops through use of Ipu Lani, Inc's grant from Hawaii Tourism Authority. We have six workshops remaining at this time and all are filled to capacity. The 2009 Ipu Workshop Series have been a huge success so far.
We will have a Hawaii Gourd Society meeting and pot-luck at 4 PM on October 18, 2009, at Ipu Lani Farm (84-5125 Keala o Keawe Rd, Honaunau). The Society will be celebrating the fall harvest, good friends and ipu supporters, along with honoring Hawaii's 50th Anniversary of Statehood.
Once again, Hawaii Gourd Society thanks you for your support!
Mahalo nui loa for your support.
Ipu rule!
